The SKA project is an international initiative aiming to build and operate two next-generation radio interferometres that will transform our understanding of the Universe. They will provide answers to different fundamental questions in astronomy, astrobiology and fundamental physics, and Spain is one of the countries contributing to the project since its inception. The SKA Organisation was the entity in charge of the design and pre-construction activities of the telescopes, and Spain became one of its members in June 2018. Once the design phase was finished, the SKA Observatory (SKAO) was established in January 2021 as the Intergovernmental Organisation (IGO) with the mission of building and operating these radio interferometres. The SKAO consists of the Global Headquarters in the United Kingdom, with its two telescopes located in South Africa and Australia. In April 2023, Spain became the 9th member of the observatory.
